Hostplus backs Main Sequence second fund

Hostplus has backed Main Sequence’s second fund as part of its ongoing commitment to delivering its members well considered investment options that also fund life-changing technologies, including those that address climate change.

Main Sequence, which is the deep tech investment fund founded by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, invests in companies that are at the forefront of solving societal problems in areas such as health, food and industrial productivity.

Hostplus, which also participated in Main Sequence’s first fund in 2018, is Australia’s single largest institutional investor in venture capital with over $2 billion committed to investments in this space.

Coinciding with establishing its second fund, Main Sequence has announced that it is also increasing its focus on science and engineering discoveries that address decarbonisation and, in doing so, develop tangible technologies that would reverse climate impact.

Hostplus CEO, David Elia said, “We are proud to participate in Main Sequence’s second fund at a time when the companies and technologies it backs have a critical role to play in addressing the complex problems facing the world. The fund’s priorities align strongly with our commitment to investing in nation-building projects and life-changing technologies. This is not just important to us for the societal benefits that will be realised, but also the sustainable and long-term returns that will be generated and which are in the best financial interests of our members.”

“Our investment strategy is built for the future and that’s why I am particularly pleased that there is an increased focus on technologies that reduce carbon emissions through which Hostplus will further expand our investments in climate solutions,” Mr Elia added.
