The 2020-21 financial year recently concluded on 30 June and it’s safe to say it was one that was quite welcomed. Investment markets broadly recovered the territory lost in the previous financial year, following the downturn of early 2020.

Our conviction in our long-term investment strategy ensured that Hostplus was well placed to withstand the downturn and take advantage of the market recovery.

I’m delighted to report to you that Hostplus finished the 2020-21 year having delivered its best ever single-year performance across a range of investment options, including all three of our popular Balanced options.

The Balanced (MySuper) option, in which the majority of our members invest, delivered an outstanding net return of 21.32%, the option’s best annual result in our 32-year history.¹  Both Indexed Balanced (18.88%) and SRI Balanced (21.82%) also delivered best-ever results for members in those options.²

When looking at all Hostplus investment options, nine out of ten of our 1.26 million members received a return that was the highest ever in a single financial year for their given option.

I know that many of our members have endured a very tough year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic and societal effects.

As stewards of our members’ retirement savings, we’re very pleased to have been able to deliver such a terrific outcome for you this year. That’s why we're so delighted that our Balanced option has been ranked one of the top 3 options over rolling 5, 7, 10, 15 and 20 year periods for members in the accumulation phase.¹

And for account-based pension members, our Balanced option ranked number 1 in Australia this past financial year, as well over rolling 5 and 7-year periods³, an outstanding result for those members.

And while past performance is not a guarantee of future outcomes, you can rest assured that our track record of being one of the country’s most consistently top-performing funds over longer-term periods up to 20 years⁴, as rated by Australia’s leading and independent superannuation researchers, is something we are immensely proud of and will continue to strive for.

As we commence this new financial year, Hostplus enters an exciting period of growth and development, as we work towards our Fund’s merger with Intrust Super and expected merger with Statewide Super. At the same time, an increasing number of Australians and employers choose Hostplus as their lifetime super fund of choice, allowing us to provide our members with the greater scale benefits that this brings.
